You might first hear a high-pitched squeal or screech—especially when accelerating or turning. Then, suddenly, you lose power steering, the battery light flashes, and your engine temp starts climbing fast.

Likely Issues

Cracked/Frayed Serpentine Belt

Age and heat cause rubber to degrade, resulting in a squealing noise, power steering loss, alternator warning light, or overheating.

Replace the serpentine belt. Usually a simple and relatively inexpensive fix

Loose or Worn Belt Tensioner

The Tensioner spring wears out, reducing belt tension, resulting in a squealing noise at startup or under load, a slipping belt, or accessory failure.

Replace the tensioner and possibly the belt. Always check pulley alignment too.

Misaligned Pulleys

Worn bearings, damaged brackets, or incorrect installation result in a chirping or squealing belt, visible belt walk or wobble.

Realign or replace the affected pulley or bracket. May need professional adjustment.

Timing Belt Wear or Failure

Age, high mileage, or oil contamination can cause the engine misfires, a ticking sound, the engine won’t start, or catastrophic engine damage (if it breaks).

Replace every 60,000–100,000 miles as preventive maintenance.
